The 2018 VS2na Season

We love our Sports 2000 racing. Just like the old song says “Come rain or come shine.”

April at VIR saw 14 S2000's come out to play for our 2018 kickoff event. There was a bit of rain on Saturday ( a re-occurring event this year ), but Sunday’s race was dry with cool and fast conditions. Mark Coombs won overall in S2 with Tom Kane following with a HS2 win.

May is always Jefferson 500 month, but this year mother nature threw us a curve. Actually she threw us 5 or 6 inches of rain, canceling the entire VRG event.

June at Mid Ohio was hot and humid, but our first event running with FRP went well. Lots of track time, and no schedule glitches, allowed the 15 S2 racers to have a good weekend. All that is except Brent Gernert who hit an errant exhaust pipe on the back straight, but could have been a lot worst. Mark again won S2, with Jim Hallman winning VS2.

If it’s July, and New Jersey, then in must be hot, humid, and some rain ( naturally ). The nasty thunderstorms of Friday at NJMSP’s Thunderbolt track gave way to nice weather Saturday and Sunday. All ten S2000's finished both of our races with the feature races won by John Thompson in S2, Bryan Gernert in VS2, and Jack Freehoff in HS2.

August saw our smallest field at Grattan, but VS2 did acquire three new members! Henry Payne bested a small but strong field in S2000's.

September was a busy month with two races scheduled:

The beginning of the month saw our return to Pittsburgh for the first time since they extended the track. Great layout and a fun place to race. To bad it rained again. We did get our Saturday race in, with Brent Gernert edging out John Thompson in the rain, while Steve Groh finished first in HS2. Sunday was canceled because of the scheduled 5 or 6 inches of rain ( again )

Two weeks later we were at The Glen for the SCCA’s Fun One. Running the GP and Short Course ( NASCAR’s idea of a road course ) is always interesting. The SCCA did grant us a feature, S2000's only race, besides two other races run with a mix of formula and SCCA sports races. Brent Gernert had a hat trick, winning all three races in S2. His brother Bryan won the two SCCA races in VS2, with Jim Hallman winning the S2000 only feature.

As is our custom had a social at each race where we made sure each competitor took home some of our loyal sponsors “goodies” The Glen social was especially well attended, with everyone in agreement it was a great way to finish the season.

Season Points Champions: Brent Gernert S2 Rob Dusek II VS2 Jack Freehoff HS2

With 9 races on the 2019 schedule, VS2na should be bigger and better this coming season.
